As its name suggests, UV light is beyond the violet end of the spectrum, and is invisible to humans. However, photographic film is sensitive to UV light. UV light can be used in medical diagnosis for some skin conditions, and can be used as a forensic tool to detect forgery of art or documents. Flowers photographed in UV light often reveal patterns on the petals which only insects, with their UV-sensitive eyes, can see. Fluorescent dyes, which glow under UV light, may be used as markers to make cells more visible, or may be used to highlight otherwise invisible stress fractures in metal components.
