Science as a happening event
A new category and more prize money from the Science Photo Library have been added to this year's Novartis and The Daily Telegraph Visions of Science photographic awards.
Under the new category, Science in Action, judges will be looking for images that capture science as it happens in the natural world or in the working lives of doctors, scientists and researchers.

The other three picture categories are Science as Art for images that can stand alone as a 'work of art', Science Close-up for imagery created by the latest scientific equipment and Science Concepts for images using a conceptual or abstract approach with a scientific subject or idea.
Last year's competition attracted over 700 entries and this year the prize money has risen to £7,000 - £6,000 of it donated by the Science Photo Library. Entry is open to professional and amateur photographers and entries must be sent in by May 31. Judging will take place in July and the winners will receive their awards at a ceremony in September.
Maria Storey, Science Photo Library marketing and communications director, said: "The Visions of Science awards, now in their third year, have already become established as an important accolade for photographers and are attracting some of the best science imagery around."
