NEWS RELEASE 20 Dec 2000

Journeying through space with the Science Photo Library

A sparkling, visual journey through the universe is promised with the new calendar from the Science Photo Library (SPL).

Taking inspiration from the famous Stanley Kubrick film, '2001 a space odyssey', the 12 colour images provide a trip into deeper and deeper space. A scale bar is used to mark the distance from the earth. The year opens with a Shuttle photograph of the setting moon at one light second away and closes with a Hubble Space Telescope image of a galaxy cluster 400 million light years away. Detailed captions are provided on the reverse of each page.

Maria Storey, marketing and communications director, says: "SPL is probably the world's leading source for astronomical imagery with extensive collections from NASA and major observatories around the world as well as from the best astro-photographers. The calendar is a beautiful showcase for their imagery."

The Science Photo Library is independent, privately owned and the only one of its kind in Britain. SPL is renowned for its high quality picture bank of 130,000 images created by photographers, illustrators, scientists and medical specialists.
