Science Photo Library launches biggest-ever catalogue with search and download feature available on the net

The latest catalogue from the Science Photo Library (SPL) is now available and on its way to over 100,000 picture buyers world-wide. A new feature is that the images are available from SPLŐs website www.sciencephoto.com and can be downloaded as low resolution files for presentations and layouts. A keyword search facility has also been introduced making it easier and quicker to find images. Maria Storey, marketing & communications director from SPL said: "This is our biggest and best catalogue so far. The opening section, 'Concepts', encourages a lateral approach in the search for the right image and illustrates the versatility of the scientific image within the advertising and design world. This is particularly useful for clients looking to convey the complexities of new technology or the sheer simplicity of an innovative design.

"Science and Art are often seen as opposites, but within the archives of the Science Photo Library, there is a meeting of the two disciplines. Scientific imagery provides the creative world with a new visual language to illustrate their briefs and is becoming common currency. Our pictures have already become the main source of images for the millennium." Other sections in the catalogue include: research, health, body, technology, earth, space and the environment. There are images showing the world from every perspective using the most advanced and creative forms of imaging - satellite.

imagery, thermography, kirlian photography, X-rays, medical imaging (MRI, CAT, PET), high-speed photography, ultrasound imaging, microscopy, computer graphics and 3D computer modelling. The images have been produced both by fine art photographers as well as scientists. Some new photography has been specially commissioned.

The catalogue and website show only a small selection from the SPL collection, which encompasses images across the whole spectrum of the scientific world. SPL's collection ranges from historical images - portraits of scientists, early photography, engravings of medical practice; to the contemporary - with up-to-date images of the cutting edge of science - cloning, millennium bug; to the future - artists' impressions of life on space stations.

The catalogue design is by Richard Adams Associates who has also designed SPL's new corporate identity. It was printed by Heanor Gate Reprographics & Printing in Derby.
